A spokesman for Grampian Police said the three were pronounced dead at the scene.
The A95 was closed to allow a collision investigation team to carry out a detailed examination of the scene.
The accident was branded "horrific" by the town's local councillor who said it would leave locals reeling.
Linda Gorn added: "We are used to having accidents around here, especially on the A96, but to have three people dying in the circumstances they did is quite horrific.
"I would imagine the town will be reeling from this information."
Inspector Dennis Hall said: "One of the cars caught fire following the collision and the three occupants of this vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene."
