Bus services axed by fuel costs

Stagecoach said rising fuel prices were among the reasons for the cuts

The bus operator Stagecoach is to scrap or alter dozens of services in Fife because of rising fuel prices.

The company has announced a major review of its routes across the area because of low passenger numbers and rising costs, primarily for diesel.

Details of which services face the axe have not been revealed but it is expected that most face some changes.

The company has insisted passengers will not be left stranded with some new routes expected to begin.

New timetables will be published on the company's website on Monday, the firm said.

The changes are not expected to begin until 18 August.

Diesel is one of the biggest expenses bus operators face and increased prices are affecting profits.

A spokeswoman for Stagecoach East Scotland said: "As part of our ongoing service review, there will be a number of changes to services across Fife.

"We are currently working on the new timetable leaflets.

"Once the timetables have been produced they will be available to download from our website from Monday 21 July and will be stocked in our travel shops and on buses from 28 July.

"We will also highlight these changes in posters on board our buses in due course."
