Safety plea over Hogmanay party
Last year's event
Thousands of revellers are expected to throng the streets
The organisers of Edinburgh's world-famous Hogmanay party have issued safety advice to those looking to attend the event.

Extra security will be present following the terrorism incidents in London although police stress there is no specific threat to Edinburgh.

More than 100,000 revellers are expected to line the city's streets in the run-up to the bells.

Scottish acts Texas, KT Tunstall and El Presidente are among those performing.

Councillor Brian Fallon said the council wanted to ensure that the celebrations remained the "best and safest in the world".

"The safety of partygoers is always our paramount concern," he said.

"We ask people listen to the advice from the police and stewards on the night - they are there to ensure you see the in New Year safe, warm and happy.

"Safety is everyone's responsibility, so please bring your New Year cheer in plastic containers and dress warmly.

Top safety tips
Come to planned events early
Dress sensibly for the weather
Arrange a meeting point with friends
Plan transport home in advance
Don't bring any glass bottles
Follow the advice of police and stewards

"Have a great night but drink sensibly and look after your friends."

Councillor Fallon's message was backed by Ian Dickson, assistant chief constable of Lothian and Borders Police.

He said: "Police officers will be on hand to help and to ensure your night is as enjoyable and safe as possible.

"For your own safety and security, we advise you to heed police advice given on the night."

Plastic plea

Those attending the street party should bring any drinks in plastic containers as glass would be confiscated and destroyed.

Pete Irvine, director of Unique Events, which organises Edinburgh's New Year concerts, said all that was needed was a "bit of common sense".

He added: "We've got a brilliant programme this year and we want everyone to enjoy it.

"That means being sensible about what you wear and what you do and looking out for you and yours.

"Edinburgh's Hogmanay is one of the safest and most congenial outdoor events in the world; great to be part of. Let's keep it like that."
