Business Secretary Lord Mandelson has outlined a package of government support for the UK car industry potentially worth up to �2.3bn.
The package was linked to an agenda of reinventing car production as a low carbon sector.
Lord Mandelson said he wanted British car makers to become "greener, more innovative and more productive".
