Car production sees sharp fall

The number of new cars manufactured in December 2008 has fallen dramatically, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

Last month, production was 47.5% lower than in the same period in 2007.

Professor David Bailey from Birmingham Business School said it was time for the government to act in what was an ''unprecedented'' situation for the car industry.
