Many protested over the potential loss of green space |
Plans to build a new 20,000-seater stadium for Swindon Town FC suffered a set back on Thursday. Councillors voted to keep a community forest on land earmarked for the stadium at Shaw Park, which leaves the club looking for another venue.
They want the forest to be protected, although the club could still submit a planning application.
Swindon Town FC had urged its fans to support the project. Its current ground is owned by the borough council.
But some fans and residents have demonstrated and leafleted against the project from the beginning, objecting primarily to the loss of green space.
