Schools policy to be reconsidered
A shake-up of primary education in Shropshire which could see up to 20 schools close, is to be reconsidered by the county council.

The authority has been asked to review its decision to adopt a new policy for the county's 141 primary schools.

Declining pupil numbers and a growth in surplus places means "reorganisation" is needed, education officials claim.

But a scrutiny panel requested the review following public meetings in Cockshutt, Shrewsbury and Craven Arms.

Savings unclear

It is concerned that not enough consideration has been given to the impact on communities and the strength of feeling against closures.

There is also a lack of information about how much money will be saved, the committee said.

Roger Evans, chairman of the scrutiny panel, said: "The future of our children's education is very important and it is essential that the local community have every opportunity to have their say."

A vote will be taken on whether to implement the controversial policy at a full council meeting on 14 December.

Liberal Democrats on South Shropshire District Council (SSDC) said primary school closures should only be considered on educational grounds.

They are calling for a special meeting of SSDC to debate the issue.
