Primary school set to be closed
Childs Ercall School
The school is 'too small and too expensive' to maintain
A Shropshire primary school is set to be closed because of funding pressures.

Childs Ercall Primary School has just 17 pupils and education officials say it is "too small and expensive" to remain open.

Shropshire County Council has been recommended to agree the move at a meeting on 12 December.

A report says there are problems with the site and unsuitable buildings, while other schools in the area cost less to run.

'Too expensive'

Councillor Ann Hartley, cabinet member for schools, said: "It is always a sad and difficult decision to recommend closure of a school, particularly such a delightful school as Childs Ercall.

"However, as elected councillors we have to look to a wider picture than just one school.

"Childs Ercall is just too small and too expensive for us to justify the cost, given the very good schools only a little distance away."

Head teacher Heather Lane said the school was "patiently awaiting" the outcome of the meeting.

"In the meantime we're carrying on as normal and the children are looking forward to the Christmas festivities."
