Primary schools shake-up agreed

More than 1,000 people responded in the review
Councillors in Shropshire have agreed a policy which could lead to the closure or merger of up to 20 primary schools.

The authority said it needed to tackle falling pupil numbers but claimed there was currently no "hit-list" of schools.

Protesters concerned for the future of their schools attended the meeting in Shirehall, Shrewsbury, on Wednesday.

The new policy to reorganise primary education is aimed at addressing surplus places and government funding pressures.

Polly Peters, from Lydbury North, said she was angry at the cabinet's decision.

"I felt that many of the points had not been taken on board properly. I was appalled by some of the speakers on the cabinet themselves in terms of their lack of information on the proposal in front of them," she said.

More than 1,000 people responded to the review.

During the six-week consultation, meetings were held with head teachers and pupils throughout Shropshire.
