Ward and beds shut to save money
Protest in Bridgnorth
People protested against the plans in Bridgnorth in January
A cash-strapped NHS trust wants to close a mental health ward and 20 hospital beds in a bid to save 3m.

Plans to close three community hospitals in Shropshire were dropped in April but officials said "substantial changes" would still take place.

The plans include closing a ward at Ludlow Hospital, six beds at Whitchurch Hospital and cutting the number of health visitors and district nurses.

The NHS in Shropshire collectively has a 55m deficit.

There are no cuts planned for Bridgnorth however the Stone House Hospital at Bishops Castle is expected to be transferred to a non-profit organisation with 12 NHS beds kept for local use.

The proposals are now being put out for public consultation before a final decision is made.

Figures had suggested 2.4m could be saved by closing Bridgnorth Community Hospital and 1.8m from shutting the site at Whitchurch.

But a campaign was launched to save the facilities with thousands of people taking part in marches and petitions to present to MPs.
