Anti-social and yobbish behaviour will not be tolerated in York during next week's Royal Ascot race meeting, police have warned. Hundreds of extra officers will be drafted into the city from across North Yorkshire for the five-day event.
"Policing will be firm but fair", said Ch Supt Tim Madgwick. "Offenders can expect to be arrested."
Mr Madgwick also promised that normal police services in other parts of York would be maintained.
Foot patrols
Sixty thousand racegoers are expected each day at the Knavesmire event which has been switched to York while the Ascot course is redeveloped.
There will be a heavy police presence with foot patrols on all pedestrian routes to and from the racecourse before and after each day's racing.
Other officers will be on duty during the evenings to watch for trouble at city centre pubs.
"We want racegoers, visitors and residents alike to enjoy what should be a memorable occasion for everyone connected with the city," Mr Madgwick said.
"This is no doubt one of the biggest operations we have had to plan in the city's history but we are well-practiced in dealing with high-profile race meetings and large crowds.
