An inquiry in Boston could have implications for a town bypass |
A public inquiry starts on Tuesday looking at controversial plans for a new road and bridge in Boston, Lincs. Work on the 9m project is on hold until the inquiry verdict. Supporters say it will take 200 heavy lorries a day off the existing Haven bridge.
If approved, the Dock Link Road would provide a new bridge across the Haven and a link to the port from the A16.
Critics, including the Boston Bypass Pressure Group, say it will only move congestion to other areas.
Port expansion
Some think the bridge and road scheme under review could affect longer-term bypass plans for the town notorious for its congestion.
The project is backed by firms including Finnforest, one of Boston's largest employers, and the Port of Boston. It should allow the port to expand and bring in more money and jobs.
The inquiry at the Boston College conference centre is expected to last three days, with the inspector giving a ruling some weeks later.
If he backs the scheme then work could start later this year.
