Presenters from BBC Two's Top Gear programme are to switch on this year's Blackpool illuminations.

Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May will flick the switch on 29 August to mark the start of a 66-day run of the resort's famous lights.

Thousands of tourists are set to visit the town to see the six-mile stretch of illuminations along the promenade.

The switch-on will coincide with a free concert and will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 2.

This year's illuminations will include new designs for the second year running from interior design guru Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen.

The council is also planning to ask firms in the town to contribute more towards the upkeep of the resort's lights after it was revealed that donations from businesses in the town have dropped by 50% over the past decade.
