Seafront's 'living landmark' plan

The decision is due in June
Blackpool seafront could be turned into a "living landmark" if a multi-million pound lottery bid is successful.

Regeneration company ReBlackpool wants to change the character of the prom between the North and South piers.

The town will have to wait until June to find out if the application for 21m, submitted to the lottery's Living Landmarks fund, is a success.

The prom revamp would then form part of the "masterplan", complementing the planned rebuild of the sea wall.

The total cost of the ReBlackpool proposals is about 47m, but additional funding for the bid will come from the North West Development Agency, European Regional Development Fund and the Arts Council.

The company says changes to the promenade will only be undertaken after consultation with the local community.

Reg Haslam, Director of Development at ReBlackpool, said: "The aim is to work with the people of Blackpool to develop ideas for creating a conspicuous, dazzling jewel, fusing past and present; myth and reality; fantasy and imagination.

"Nothing is out of the question - especially the out-of-the-ordinary. We want this project to fire people's imaginations and get them thinking about what the seafront could look like."
