Blackpool's seafront takes shape
Blackpool sea defences
The work will give a new look to the resort's famous sands
Work has started on a new 62m seafront at Blackpool.

The government-funded scheme in Blackpool is the biggest civil engineering programme even undertaken in the resort.

The first of 10,000 "piles" have been driven into the sands to rebuild the promenade and sea wall from the Sandcastle to the North Pier.

The system would protect waterfront properties and create a "unique seafront experience", the council said.

Blackpool councillor Fred Jackson said: "It is great to see this work starting to mark the beginning of a really exciting time for the town."
