Walkers get caught out by the incoming tide |
Beach patrols at Blackpool say they are dealing with up to 20 incidents a day of people caught out by the tide. Walkers are putting their lives at risk by ignoring keep out signs or getting stuck on sandbanks as the tide comes in, the patrols say.
Terry Rogers, chief beach patrol officer, said the problem has been worse since the weather has got warmer.
A month ago, Alex Yorke and Oliver Harvey, both 16, drowned as they tried to save a dog in the sea at Blackpool.
People have been seen stepping over the keep out signs |
The boys had been walking with friends along the lower promenade close to Gynn Square when the accident happened. Mr Rogers said: "Because we've got nice conditions, people go on the sandbanks and they sit down and stare out to the sea, and the tide will come in behind them and there's no way to get out."
Loud speakers and signs are used to warn those on the beach about the tide, but people frequently step over the signs to go on the sands.
The resort's beach patrol is based on the North Promenade.
