New prom to 'exceed expectations'
Plans for the new sea wall
Flooding is a major problem in Blackpool
A 62m project to build a new promenade and sea wall in Blackpool will exceed the expectations of visitors, the local council has said.

The project will renovate the part of the promenade that runs from the North Pier to the Sandcastle entertainment centre on the sea front.

The money has come from a Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) grant.

The work will protect the sea front from high tides.

Blackpool Council says the work will put an end to excess water and debris being washed onto the shore and will create a "contemporary seafront experience".

Ideas for the new sea wall will go on public display
Reg Haslam from Blackpool Council said the aim was to protect 1,500 local properties from water damage.

"Flooding is a major public safety issue here," he said.

He said the project would "embroider the new promenade with new experiences to exceed the expectations of visitors."

The current sea wall is 100 years old.

Concept designs are currently being drawn up and will be the subject of a public consultation in August.

Early ideas are said to include terraced sand dunes.
