Blackpool wins cash for new prom
Artist's impression of the new seafront
Ideas for the new sea wall will go on public display
Blackpool has been awarded a 62m grant to turn plans for a new promenade and sea wall into a reality.

The stretch of promenade from the North Pier to the Sandcastle entertainment centre will be renovated, protecting the sea front from high tides.

Blackpool Council says the work will put an end to excess water and debris being washed onto the shore.

The grant was approved by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

The council says the work will create a "contemporary seafront experience".

Plans for the new sea wall
Early ideas include terraced sand dunes
Concept designs are currently being drawn up and will be the subject of a public consultation in August.

Early ideas are said to include terraced sand dunes.

Blackpool councillor Fred Jackson said the work would take four years to complete.

"Essentially Blackpool's seawall has reached the end of its shelf-life.

"We have to renew it and will be consulting those affected and working hard to minimise disruption by building the giant build-outs in sections.

"The work is a crucial part of the council's shoreline strategy plan but it also gives us a great opportunity to create something really special and exciting in Blackpool."

Environment Minister Elliot Morley said: "I am delighted that we are able to fund this project and protect such a large number of households and businesses in Blackpool from the potential damage caused by sea flooding.

"This scheme not only protects lives and property but also enhances the seafront and will help with Blackpool's regeneration".
