Travellers have been arriving for the Great Dorset Steam Fair |
Fears that traveller groups would set up in the countryside around one of the UK's biggest steam fairs have been tackled, council chiefs say. Powers to move on travellers from private sites have been used for the first time by North Dorset District Council and the police.
Travellers visiting this week's Great Dorset Steam Fair have been moved on to a council paid-for site in Stourpaine.
Residents in the area have been assured the site will be well-managed.
Voluntary move
Liz Goodall, the council's chief executive, said: "The residents of Stourpaine are obviously concerned about the council providing a temporary site in their area and we are working with the police to try to keep problems to a minimum.
"The site is being managed well and the police have also put extra resources into Stourpaine and the adjoining area."
The first travellers moved into the area on 21 August, ahead of the Tarrant Hinton event, which runs until Sunday.
They and a second group voluntary moved onto the site at Stourpaine.
More groups have been moved onto the site from the Blandford Bypass and other locations.
