257 Squadron arrived at the steam fair by lorry |
A historic locomotive needing a 250,000 revamp has been taken to a steam fair on the back of a lorry. The 128-tonne "257 Squadron" arrived at the Great Dorset Steam Fair in time for its opening on Wednesday.
Fundraisers from Swanage Railway hope to raise 100,000 towards the overhaul of the locomotive's boiler.
It is hoped the 200,000 visitors expected at the Tarrant Hinton event - one of the biggest in the country - will donate to the scheme.
'Awesome sight'
Swanage Railway fundraising officer Alan Maynard said: "The Great Dorset Steam Fair is probably the best and largest event of its kind in the country and it is wonderful to bring 257 Squadron to such a prestigious and popular event.
"It will makes an awesome sight at the Great Dorset Steam Fair."
After the fair, the Battle of Britain-class Bulleid Pacific No 34072 will continue its road journey to Kent where it is to be given the major overhaul before returning to Swanage Railway.
It is hoped the locomotive, built in 1948, will return to service by its 60th anniversary.
