Arts centre plans go on display
The Quad - architect's drawing
The Quad building will be a centre for arts in Derby
Plans for a 9.9m media and visual arts centre in Derby are going on public display after months of consultation.

The Quad Arts Centre will host live events and feature an arts cinema, along with galleries and workshops.

The city council has backed the development despite some political opposition and protests over earlier plans to move a war memorial.

Derby city councillor Hardyal Dhindsa said the war memorial gardens will now remain "untouched".

'Iconic building'

"We have worked closely with the representatives of the veterans association and the gardens will be protected and enhanced," he said.

He said the project will result in a "tangible iconic building for the people of Derby".

"We don't want to be second-best to anyone in the country - and this will put us on the regional map."

The project is due to be completed by early 2008.

The plans will be on public display at the Guildhall Theatre Foyer, Roman House on Friar Gate and on the internet.

The public exhibition will run until 17 September when the finals plans will go before city council.
