Protest plan over memorial move
War veterans from Derbyshire are planning a mass protest over plans to build a multi million pound arts centre on the site of a memorial.

The new QUAD cinema and arts centre will be housed on the Sir Peter Hilton Memorial Garden in Corporation Street.

The veterans say they are outraged that a memorial which took decades to establish could be disturbed.

Organisers have confirmed they will be demonstrating on Sunday against the city council's decision.

Move offered

Roy McGahey, Memorial Officer for the Derby and Burton branch of the Korean War Veterans Association, said: "We feel very strongly about this because Sir Peter Hilton did a tremendous amount of good for Derby - he was instrumental in getting it made a city.

"We tried for 50 years in getting a war memorial for Korean War veterans and it has been in place for just 16 months before they want to move it."

He appealed for all veterans and their families to attend the event in the Market Square.

Derby City Council, which has offered to either incorporate the memorial into the centre or move it to a new location, has said the plans have already been discussed and approved.
