Arts centre overcomes opposition
Quad design
The memorial would be incorporated into the new building
Councillors have agreed to press ahead with plans to build a new cinema and arts centre in Derby - in spite of strong opposition from war veterans.

They are unhappy the Quad would be built on the Colonel Sir Peter Hilton Memorial Garden in Corporation Street.

The council has said the memorial would be incorporated into the building which would have a cinema and galleries.

But last night, councillors agreed to go ahead - and are now looking at ways of financing the 12.5m project.

Cash negotiations

The plans have been attacked by the Korean War Veterans Association, who do not want to see the garden and memorial disturbed.

The association say they are now planning demonstrations.

The council has money from the Arts Council, and will get more from the sale of the Q Arts building, which will also move into the centre.

It is also in negotiations for more cash from the East Midlands Development Agency.
