Thousands of fans will watch the game in Liverpool's pubs |
The Champions League final will not be broadcast live on the BBC Big Screen in Liverpool city centre after police raised concerns over public safety. Thousands of fans are expected to meet in the city's bars to watch Liverpool play AC Milan in Istanbul on Wednesday.
Big Screen Liverpool manager Bren O'Callaghan, said they had acted on advice from Merseyside Police.
"The extra demands of policing such a large public showing of the game would prove extremely difficult", he said.
Safety concerns
"The BBC and its partners in the Liverpool Big Screen understand the level of interest from the public wishing to see the Champions League Final shown live in Clayton Square on Wednesday evening.
"Discussions have taken place with all the parties involved but following advice from Merseyside Police and the local authority have decided not to show the game because of safety concerns."
The FA Cup Final was not shown live on the BBC Manchester Big Screen last Saturday after police intelligence signalled there was potential for disruption and disorder.
It was understood that the intelligence related to protests against Malcolm Glazer's takeover of Manchester United.
This match was shown on the BBC Screen in Liverpool.
