The screen is the third to be erected in the UK |
A giant screen showing BBC programmes and local arts and entertainment in Clayton Square, Liverpool, is to be officially switched on. The BBC Big Screen is the third to be erected in the UK, and the second in the North West.
It will broadcast BBC programmes, news and major events and offer filmmakers the chance to air their own video work.
Friday's official launch will feature local performers and be broadcast live on BBC North West Today.
Talent showcase
Test broadcasts have been carried out over the last few weeks and audiences have been able to watch the BBC's coverage of the Olympics Games.
The screen will show local news alongside community events information and showcases of local artists, students and schoolchildren.
Bill Morris, the BBC's Project Director of Live Events, said: "The Olympic Games has already confirmed that the screen will prove to be yet another great asset for everyone living, working and visiting the heart of Liverpool.
"But it's not just about the great international sports and cultural events, the screen is equally important as a showcase for local film-makers, musicians and artists - and few cities have so much talent to put on display."
The Big Screen is a joint venture between the city council, the BBC, manufacturers Phillips and The Royal Bank of Scotland Group.
Council leader Mike Storey will switch the screen on, after performances by the Myriad Theatre Company, the Capoeira Dancers and the Hope Street Gospel Choir.
Manchester's big screen in Exchange Square went live in July last year, followed by the launch of a big screen in Birmingham earlier this year.
