Rowdy behaviour on Towan Beach has become a major problem

The council's cabinet will be told at its meeting on Monday that regular bonfires cause a nuisance to people living around the beach.

A report points out that, apart from the noise, the search for something to burn often results in nearby gardens being raided and damaged.

The council is trying to formulate a strategy to control the worst excesses of Newquay at night and Restormel officers believe controlling the bonfires will help.

They say that local people should be consulted but hope that agreement can soon be reached so the by-law can be ratified by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.

Carol Strang, the deputy chairwoman of a local residents' action group, said many households nearby are desperately hoping the by-law will be introduced.

She said: "I do believe it's a start.

"If it can be policed properly, then it will certainly help the people who want to stop these gatherings on the beach."
