Police say they are worried about serious drug offences in the town |
More police officers are being drafted into a Cornish resort after reports of late-night beach parties. Officers say there will be a significant increase in resources at Newquay over the Bank Holiday weekend.
They say they are worried about serious drug offences and warn that it is illegal to supply alcohol without a licence.
Officers say police will be moved into Newquay this weekend from across the Devon and Cornwall force area.
Long-term solution
Chief Superintendent David Ellis, Commander of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, explained that it is not illegal for people to party, light bonfires or consume alcohol whilst on the beach and therefore the police have no powers to move them on.
He added: "It is, however, illegal to supply alcohol without a licence.
"We have run undercover operations to purchase alcohol in this way which has resulted in a prosecution.
"We have also worked closely with Restormel Borough Council to prevent vehicles driving onto the beach and selling alcohol."
The force said it is committing significant resources to the town.
It is hoping extra foot patrols on beaches and in the town centre will reassure worried local people.
Chief Superintendent Ellis said: "The force is committed to working in partnership with other agencies.
"The Restormel Local Strategic Partnership is key to developing long-term solutions for Newquay and the police are fully involved in this process."
