Group formed to tackle concerns

More than 300 people from Newquay attended the meeting
People living in a Cornish town have formed an action group to tackle concerns over late night beach parties and drunken behaviour.

More than 300 Newquay residents gathered on Wednesday night to agree plans to lobby local government and the police.

The move follows claims that this summer has seen worsening behaviour by young visitors to the town.

Each resident was given three minutes to speak at the meeting, organised by Lord and Lady Long from Newquay Island above Towan Beach.

Applications invited

The members of the Newquay Residents Action Group say they intend to put pressure on the police and the local council.

Stuart Young, the manager of the Hotel Bristol, where the meeting was held says the group is good news for the town.

"It's a residents' association which has a vocal voice to go and meet with the police and all the appropriate authorities to see what can be done to alleviate the situation," said Mr Young.

But another speaker, Christine Royal, said she had some reservations that the new action group would be too one-sided in favour of residents.

The group is now inviting applications for committee members.
