Health trust pioneers smoking ban
Smoker
Smoking is associated with several terminal illnesses
A health care trust is to ban smoking on all its premises from Monday.

A spokesman for United Bristol Healthcare Trust said the smoke-free decision had been taken because smoking and good health were incompatible.

"Smoking is associated with a number of serious illnesses, such as heart disease and cancer, many of which are treated at the trust's hospitals.

"A range of supportive measures will be in place, including a smoking cessation service for staff," he said.

'Passive smoking'

Lee Furniss, of the trust's diagnostic and therapies division, said: "Everyone knows the effects of smoking on health, and as a healthcare organisation we need to give a clear message.

"Smoking, including passive smoking, is bad for your health. We want to encourage and help patients, staff and visitors to stop smoking - being smoke- free is just part of that."

Julie Searle has joined United Bristol Healthcare Trust (UBHT) as part-time smoking cessation co-ordinator.

She said: "I am here to support the smoke-free UBHT initiative and people who have decided that they want to give up smoking. But that is a decision they need to reach for themselves. "
