Residents in west Berkshire are being invited to nominate their "unsung heroes" of the July floods.

The deluge affected more than 2,500 properties in the district.

The clean-up and recovery operation in the aftermath involved churches and local flood wardens as well as the emergency services and council staff.

A special reception paying tribute to the efforts of the nominees will be held in December at the council's Newbury offices.

A spokesman for West Berkshire Council said: "The July floods affected significant areas of west Berkshire.

"Without the commitment of some individuals, the situation could have been much worse, and West Berkshire Council would like to publicly acknowledge the efforts of these unsung heroes."

Councillor Andrew Rowles, the council's chairman, will host the event celebrating those "who clearly went above and beyond their normal duties or responsibility to support the local community" in Market Street on Tuesday, 4 December at 1900 GMT.
