Two British members of a rugby club have been killed in the Bali bomb blast and hopes are fading for four other players who are missing.

The Hong Kong-based Britons - members of an amateur rugby club - were in Bali to compete in a rugby tournament.

The HKFC Vandals team manager Mark Pawley confirmed the deaths of two players.

They are Clive Walton, 34, of Roker, Sunderland, and Peter Record, 32, from London.

"Whilst we continue to hold out hope of finding those still missing, each passing hour makes success more unlikely," said Mr Pawley

A club member, Donough Foley, told a news conference the two players were confirmed dead by friends who identified their remains.

Mr Walton, the captain of the club, was the son of two Sunderland city councillors.

A Sunderland City Council spokeswoman said the authority was saddened by the news.

"Elected members and officers extend their deepest sympathy to his wife, parents Jack and Lilian and their family in this tragic loss," she said.

One of the players, who is missing, is 36-year-old insolvency agent Stephen Speirs.

His friend Kenny Mackenzie said his family was waiting to hear if he was among the dozens of bodies still to be identified.

"Everyone is very upset and devastated by the news and as every moment goes by they are bracing themselves for the news that we feel is inevitable," he said.

The Hong Kong Rugby Football Union has named the four remaining missing members of the rugby team as Tom Holmes, from Droitwich Spa, Worcestershire; Nathaniel Miller, Stephen Speirs and Edward Waller.

Wonderful son

Mr Holmes' brother Paul said Tom lived his life for sport.

"He was a wonderful, loving son, brother and uncle," he said.

The team manager Mark Pawley said the families of the players still missing had been contacted and were "expecting the worst."

Meanwhile, another Midlands man who was with another rugby team in Bali was among those killed in the bomb attack.

Neil Bowler, of Feckenham, Worcestershire, had lived in Singapore for the past five years.
