A North East man who was caught up in the horror of the Bali blast was able to help treat the injured before recording the aftermath of the attack.

Nick Burgoyne from Yarm in Teesside was one of many foreigners working on the island, and headed from the scene of the blast when he realised how serious an incident it was.

He said: "There was glass and twisted metal, pieces of car and pieces of people, rubble, glass, and fires still burning."

Rescue teams were hard at work, and Mr Burgoyne, who has no medical training, felt he could be of greater help at the local Sangla Hospital.

He said: "I spent all of yesterday assisting in surgery and doing post-operative stuff, with my gloves and wearing my t-shirt and jeans.

"It was basic field surgery conditions, basic stuff that has been around in the UK for decades they don't have here."

Mr Burgoyne worked for 15 hours helping to treat the injured, mainly those suffering from serious burns.

He returned again to the hospital today, and took a series of photographs of the injured recovering in hospital.
