Jung Chang - Remembering Mao

Jung Chang shot to fame with her first book Wild Swans
In a Hardtalk Extra interview broadcast on Friday 24th June, Mishal Husain spoke to the celebrated author of Wild Swans, Jung Chang, about her controversial new work.

Jung Chang is best known in the West for Wild Swans, an intimate portrait of three generations of her own family.

That book opened many eyes to the harsh realities of daily life in twentieth-century China.

After over a decade of intensive research, her eagerly awaited follow-up is an exhaustive biography of Chairman Mao.

As China booms economically, what will be the legacy of the Mao years?

Jung Chang is in no doubts. She tells Mishal Husain she believes Mao was as evil as Hitler and Stalin.

HARDtalk Extra can be seen on Fridays on BBC World at 03:30 GMT, 08:30 GMT, 15:30 GMT, 18:30 GMT and 23:30 GMT.

It can also be seen on BBC News 24 at 04:30 and 23:30
