| AIM This Bill will enable the construction, maintenance and operation of Crossrail, a new east-west rail link in central London. MAIN PROVISIONS  | BILL'S PROGRESS Responsible department: Dept for Transport Origin: House of Commons Introduced: 18 May 2005 Second reading: 18 July 2005 Select Committee: 17 Jan - 4 May 2006 | The rail link will join Maidenhead and Heathrow with Shenfield and Abbey Wood through new tunnels under central London Crossrail will operate 24 trains an hour at peak times in both directions, carrying nearly 200 million passengers a year Crossrail would relieve congestion and overcrowding as well as improving access to both Heathrow and Stansted airports BACKGROUND This bill was introduced in the last session (22nd February 2005), and a motion was passed for it to be carried over into this session. It only passed through some early, technical stages, and has yet to be debated on the floor of Parliament. This bill is a hybrid bill. It will be treated like a private bill for part of its passage through Parliament, giving individuals and bodies the opportunity to "petition" against it.
