Israel declares a 'government of national unity' after a day in which two of its soldiers were brutally murdered by a Palestinian lynch mob - and its helicopters took vicious revenge on the town and inhabitants of Ramallah. From there, the BBC's Ben Brown reports.

A French cameraman captures shocking footage of a Palestinian boy being shot by Israeli soldiers while his father desperately tries to shield him from the attack. Israel later expressed sorrow at the death but accused the Palestinians of making "cynical use" of children in clashes with Israeli troops.

Ariel Sharon makes his fateful visit to Jerusalem

In what was to become one of the sparks that ignited the current violence, the hard-line Israeli opposition leader, Ariel Sharon, visited Jerusalem's holiest site, the compound around Al-Aqsa mosque. The BBC's Hilary Andersson sent this report.
