On arriving in Egypt, Mr Powell met with Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov, where he reiterated his view that Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was a danger not only to the US but also the whole Middle East. The BBC's Jon Leyne outlines the challenges of the trip. Exchange in Egypt
In talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Mr Powell said he recognised that some in Egypt were unhappy about the air raids on Iraq, but he maintained they were justified.
Israel's peace demand
After meeting Israeli Prime Minister-elect Ariel Sharon in Jerusalem, Mr Powell states: "I think we all need to work hard, all sides, to bring the violence under control and get out of this terrible cycle where we have violence and counter violence".
Protests on the West Bank
As his tour continued, Mr Powell told both sides that Washington was committed to establishing peace in the Middle East. But his visit sparked protests on the West Bank. As the BBC's Hilary Andersson reports, many Palestinians think the US is a one sided mediator. Reaching all sides
Colin Powell backed the Israeli stance that there must be a cessation of violence before talks resume, while at the same time calling for a lifting of the siege on the Palestinian territories.
Kuwaitis celebrate
