Only two days after the election, there are two explosions in the heart of the ultra-orthodox area of West Jerusalem. Police say the blasts, in the Me'a She'arim district, were caused by a car bomb. No-one is killed, a number of people are slightly injured. Ariel Sharon responds by demanding that the Palestinians bring a complete halt to "terror and violence". 7 February
On the morning after his election triumph Mr Sharon took time to visit the grave of his wife Lili at his family farm in southern Israel. In his victory speech he paid tribute to her, but she did not live to witness his incredible political comeback 7 February
Mr Sharon's landslide victory at the polls was greeted by wild celebrations among his Likud party supporters. The BBC's middle east correspondent Paul Adams witnessed the scenes and reports on the task facing the new prime minister when the euphoria subsides 6 February
In a victory speech to jubilant supporters in Tel Aviv, Mr Sharon ruled out any territorial concessions to the Palestinians over the status of Jerusalem, pledging to strengthen its unity. At the same time, Mr Sharon called on the Palestinians to "cast off the path of violence and return to the path of dialogue to resolve the differences between us".
