Plans to hold a census next year have been given the go-ahead by the States of Jersey. The States voted on Wednesday night to overturn a decision by the Policy and Resources committee to delay the next census until 2011.
Earlier this year the committee announced it wanted to hold the census every 10 years to try to save money.
But States members decided in favour of Constable Simon Crowcroft's plans, by 20 votes in favour to 17 against.
The president of Policy and Resources, Senator Frank Walker, said the committee could not afford to hold it next year after the money needed had already been used for a new survey on social issues.
The survey would supply data on issues which the committee currently does not have.
