New call for a 2006 Jersey census
The constable of St Helier in Jersey has called for a new census to be carried out in the island.

Simon Crowcroft has asked the States to carry out the survey originally planned to provide an accurate report of the number of people living on the island.

However the President of Policy and Resources, Senator Frank Walker says holding a census in 2011 - instead of next year - would save 500,000.

He also insists the population figures can be estimated.

It is thought the new Migration Policy - if adopted - would also give an accurate indication of the number of people living in the island.
