Plans to hold a census next year could prevent the States from getting new information on social issues in Jersey, a committee has said. The Policy and Resources Committee has been responding to calls from Constable Simon Crowcroft to reinstate the census in 2006.
Earlier this year the committee announced it wanted to hold the census every 10 years to try and save money.
It said by delaying the census it has been able to plan a new social survey.
The survey would supply data on issues which the committee currently does not have.
Accurate report
It said the delay will not result in any loss of accuracy.
But the Constable of St Helier, Simon Crowcroft, wants a full census to be done in 2006, as was originally planned before an announcement to move it to every 10 years, to get an accurate report of the number of people living in the island.
The Finance Committee has said it cannot afford a census every five years.
It said that if Constable Crowcroft's plans are approved then the Policy and Resources Committee will have to cut its plans for the new social survey.
The committee in charge of business in Jersey is also against the plans from Constable Crowcroft.
