Police in Jersey say they were called to more cases of domestic violence in 2004 than in 2003. In 2004, the police were called to 1,046 incidents, compared with 841 the year before.
Of these, police said 38 were classed as grave and criminal assaults, and 217 as common assaults.
Officers said they were seeing more cases, but added that the way they recorded had changed and that was also making figures higher.
Family ties
UK reporting guidelines now state incidents involving any relationship link are classed as domestic violence. In the past, it was only cases involving boyfriends, girlfriends or partners.
Marisha Carter from Jersey's Women's Refuge said while numbers are going up, more people were reporting cases.
She said more women are abused than men and it tended to be those aged between 20 and 40.
An island-wide advertising campaign starts next week to tell people domestic violence affects everyone in the family not just those directly involved.
