Talks held over airport job cuts

Flybe says it does not need the island's engineering base
The Manx Minister for the Department of Trade and Industry David Cretney has held crisis talks with airport staff who are under threat of redundancy.

More than 200 jobs at the former BA Connect engineering base on the island face the axe after a takeover by Flybe.

The airline, which operates several flights to the UK, has decided it does not need the base to maintain aircraft.

The talks were intended to inform staff of the latest developments and reassure them support was available.

MHK David Cretney said: "I remain hopeful Flybe and DTI can encourage other private operators to set up in the Isle of Man.

"For the staff who must seek alternative employment in a different sector, I believe the Isle of Man's strong economy and buoyant job market will mean many find something suitable.

"I will ensure the government fully plays its role in supporting this."

Flybe has said it is in talks with a number of companies about a possible buy out.

However, even if a buyer is found, it is unlikely all the engineering jobs would be saved.

Flybe has said it will retain the 40 people who work as flight and cabin crew as well as line engineers.

The affected staff have been informed that they may be made redundant on 6 June.
