Crisis talks on airport job cuts

Flybe says it does not need the island's engineering base
Manx Minister for the Department of Trade and Industry David Cretney is to hold crisis talks with airport staff who are under threat of redundancy.

More than 200 jobs at the former BA Connect engineering base on the island face the axe after a takeover by Flybe.

The airline, which operates several flights to the UK, has decided it does not need the base to maintain aircraft.

MHK David Cretney says he wants to reassure the workers that the government is doing all it can.

Flybe has said it is in talks with a number of companies about a possible buy out.

However, even if a buyer is found, it is unlikely all the engineering jobs would be saved.

Flybe has said it will retain the 40 people who work as flight and cabin crew as well as line engineers.
