Exporting rubbish abroad is being further investigated |
Businesses in Guernsey are being urged to play their part in tackling the island's waste problems. Last week, the States' supported a law amendment put forward by Mark Dorey that was aimed at encouraging more separation of waste.
Politicians and civil servants are now set to get working on the problem.
Top of the agenda will be persuading big business to do more to sort through their waste to make maximum use of their rubbish.
Commercial waste
Managing director of Island Waste Ltd Dan Hubert said: "Most people think of waste as being the rubbish we put in our dustbins.
"That only accounts for 25% of our waste - the balance is commercial, industrial and building and demolition waste and obviously this is where the greatest savings can be made."
Guernsey is running out of landfill space and must try to maximise the length of life left at Mont Cuet.
A final decision on whether to build a waste-to-energy incinerator in the island will be delayed until more research is carried out.
The exporting of rubbish to France and Germany is also going to be pursued.
