The States says there have been 'unforseen circumstances' |
Gridlock on roads in Guernsey is likely to continue as three major road closures coincide this week. The roads affected are the Ruette Braye into St Peter Port, the sea front at Glategny Esplanade and the Oatlands crossroads.
There are claims residents are not the only people fed up with traffic situation, but that tourists are also saying it has put them off returning.
The roadworks are part of the island's new integrated traffic strategy.
However, the high number of works is being defended by the Environment Department.
Two main arterial routes into St Peter Port are affected by the closure at Oatlands crossroads and the temporary traffic lights on Glategny Esplanade.
Under the new traffic strategy, main routes were not supposed to be affected at the same time.
But Colin Le Page, the principal administrative officer for the department, says unforeseen circumstances can sometimes occur, which can result in a greater number of roadworks than planned.
