December date for waste systems

The exporting of waste from Alderney is set to last three years
It is hoped new equipment to process Alderney's waste for shipping to Guernsey will be in place by December.

At this week's Alderney States meeting, members voted to export the island's waste to Guernsey.

Alderney States engineer Steve Smith said that now island politicians have given approval for the scheme it can be in place relatively quickly.

Mr Smith said the new equipment, which will cost the island 120,000, should be operational within 10 weeks.

The island plans to use this method of disposal for the next three years, as the States believes it only provides a temporary solution.

The move overturns a previous decision to bring in a batch oxidation system, which deals with waste by allowing it to smoulder in a sealed chamber.

The States hopes the amount of waste shipped will be kept to a minimum by carrying out a considerable amount of recycling and sorting in the island.
