Moving waste may cause rates rise

The bulk of Alderney's waste will be shipped to Guernsey
Alderney ratepayers could face rises in charges to pay for the shipping of waste to Guernsey.

The equipment needed to compact the waste will cost more than 100,000.

Rates have already been increased this year to cover the cost of recycling, but they may have to go up again to cover the cost of the new machinery.

The States will have to purchase a waste compactor and eight crates to transport the rubbish, along with a new generator.

It will also have to pay for ground stabling works at the Impot and a hook lift vehicle.

It is hoped the amount of waste shipped will be kept to a minimum by carrying out a considerable amount of recycling and sorting in the island.

The States proposals include rescinding the resolutions made to purchase a Batch Oxidation System.

The matter will be debated on 8 September.

Alderney has had to consider exporting its waste because of delays in improving disposal methods.
