States decides to export rubbish

The exporting of waste to Alderney is set to last for three years
Alderney's States has decided to export the island's waste to Guernsey after delays in improving its own waste disposal methods.

The move overturns a previous decision to bring in a batch oxidation system.

The States will have to purchase a waste compactor and eight crates to transport the rubbish, along with a new generator, at a total cost of 120,000.

The operation is expected to last for three years while the States looks for a more permanent solution.

Batch oxidation deals with waste by allowing it to smoulder in a sealed chamber.

Ratepayers could face rises in charges to pay for the shipping of the waste.

The States hopes the amount of waste shipped will be kept to a minimum by carrying out a considerable amount of recycling and sorting in the island.
