States back free school milk
Milk cartons
States members voted by 40 votes to seven in favour
A decision by Jersey's States to back free school milk has been described as a "morale booster" by a dairy industry spokesman.

States members voted by 40 votes to seven to support free school milk for another two years.

The move came despite arguments from the Finance Committee and others that it was not the best use of States funds.

Andrew Le Gallais, chairman of the Jersey Milk Marketing Board, said the industry was keen to move on and forge a better relationship with the government.

Earlier, members of the Royal Jersey Agricultural & Horticultural Society voted against importing bull semen from outside the island.

This has been banned for 240 years, but there are concerns the quality of the island herd is suffering because it is getting smaller.

The Society's Council is meeting on Wednesday to consider the implications of the result.
