States committees are being asked for milk support
Jersey Milk says the industry will not fully recover unless the island's government continues supporting free school milk.

The States is due to debate the future of school milk in Jersey this week.

A debate on the subject in March was deferred while a report on the future of the industry was prepared.

During the March debate, Deputy Geoff Southern lodged a motion proposing the Economic Development Committee pick up the milk tab until 2005.

Important role

However, the committee is not keen to keep footing the bill.

Politicians are still being urged to continue supporting free milk.

Jersey Milk managing director Kevin Keen says the report being prepared for Tuesday's debate recognises the important role free milk plays in the industry.

He said although it may only be a small amount of money for the industry, taking it away could have dire consequences and could lead to more dairy farmers leaving the industry.
